Week #2 of the Weevils summer season was looking grim on game day as several key Weevs (Uni, Diddle, Zarby and most especially Michelle!!) were away on various public relations tours. The scramble was on early to find some insane soul to stand between the pipes for the bugs on this night against one of the Gemini twin Vincent’s teams…believed to be the Raleigh contingent this game. After much consternation and brain-storming, John “Hasek Jr.” Lindenberger was procurred from the mighty C Weevils for the honor of picking up our defensive slack on this occassion. With 10 confirmed bugs, the night began to seem promising. However, parking would prove to be the biggest challenge of the night!! Damn kids’ sports!!

The first period started rough for your hero’s as the Vincent’s Pizza delivery man snuck in the Lindy’s back door and scored with his sister at the 2:10 mark. Pinna would have none of that and sent the pie back 1:34 later with “extra toppings” by Brown Eye. Vincent’s returned the favor at 11:27 and a lackluster period would end with the bugs in the hole 2-1. The Weevs play was fairly flat during the period and shots were few and far between. Vincent’s ran a very aggrssive offensive game throughout the period and the bugs seemed somewhat beleaguered by it. Lindy made several good stops to keep the damage to a minimum.

The second period started a little better with Brownie putting the calzone in the oven from Sattora and tied it up at the 4:34 mark. But Vincent’s version of an Oompa Loompa made a delivery in 30 minutes or less and banked one off of Cow’s udder while clearing the crease to keep their tip jar full….3-2 at 7:07. Tensions began to run high about midway through when Todd and the aforementioned “Loompa” decided to “get it on” at mid-ice. It looked like a monkey trying to climb a tree, but the “Loompa” put the Vulcan Death Grip on Todd and got him to the ice during the scrum. Todd must have taken his big rainbow lollipop at that point, because Webster began swinging his tiny little fists into Todd’s back. That’s when Tom “Superfly” Brown got tagged in and locked up the little circus freak. After a 3 hour delay (well…more like 3 minute), Todd was issued a 10-minute rest for “Disorderly Conduct Unbecoming of a Fellow Referee”, Gary Coleman’s stunt double was issued a 10-minute “time-out” for biting a fellow daycare attendee, and Tommy B got a 2-minute slap on the wrist for being human. Everybody was kung-fu fighting!!!! Lessons learned from this skirmish….1.) Todd dislikes “little people”, B.) the clock ALWAYS runs unless there is an injury, and 3.) Skatch won’t have a prom date this year because he made the scorekeeper chick cry by trying to berate her into starting the clock!! After all the laundry was picked up, the game resumed 5-on-5 and the Weevs capitalized on the breather. Great offensive play netted a scoring opportunity as Pinna pleased the crowd once again on a give from Sattora at 16:45. Things appear to be going the Weevs way at this point….even Neil AND Skatch are penalty free…no, seriously!! Whoa…wait a minute…Neil realizes he has some unfinished trim work in the box at the 19:09 mark and decides to get out the tool belt and miter saw and get to work!! Oh well…period ends 3-3 and the Weevs feel the burn!!

The third period turns out to be fan-friggin-tatsic!! Hard battles for the puck on both ends, great rolling saves by Lindy, containing their offensive break-outs…incredible!! The Weevs take advatage of some Vincents penalties this period (which, by the way, include “Roughing”, “Slashing” and the ever popular “Head-Butt” penalty …don’t ask…no one is sure when THAT happened!!) through some inovative line strategy from Sattora. Amazingly…it works!! The weevs take the lead 4-3 at 14:51 with a Sattora/BMoore combo meal and look to secure, but Vincent’s tie it back up less than 2 minutes later on a quick break-out at 16:28. One minute left to play and it looks like the dreaded shoot-out is in the Weevs near future, but Pinna once again finds the right G-spot and takes a “looky here” pass from a confused Vincent’s player in the slot, credited to BMoore’s tenacity, to give the good guys the go ahead goal at 19:36. ESPN SPORTCENTER TOP 10 NOMINEE: Vincent’s pulls goalie to give them the extra skater. BMoore forechecking at center ice after the puck drop is placed in harms way as the puck is lifted directly in front of him. Without hesitation, BMoore points his stick at the left field bleachers, wipes his brow, knocks the dirt off his spikes, spits out his chaw, winds up and drills a frozen rope from a waist high puck that knuckles just wide left of the empty net…let’s see that one again….WOW!! Everyone is on their feet for that what-could-have-been play….freakin’ AMAZING!! But he doesn’t stand around in awe of his own greatness….no…he presses and gets a turnover at 19:55 on the clearout attempt to close the proverbial pizza box with an empty netter. 6-4 Weevils victory.

A great display of some true Weevil scratching and clawing to stay in a game that could very easily have slipped out of reach and fast. Good work on O + good defensive adjustment + good netminding = hard fought win. Beers by Cow and some debriefing of Skatch’s child abuse and Todd’s alter ego followed on the Weevs asphaltic ice. The summer season is stacking up to be a good one as the Weev’s take a 2-0 record into game #3 next week against Team Factory. Let’s get all the pissed on’s….er, piston’s…firing!!

Side note: Everybody tell Sattora he’s pretty.
